November 2022
I don’t take lightly the fact that you let me into your email inbox once a month. Its easy to get bamboozled and overwhelmed with the flurry of emails…reminding you of this, urging you to do that, sign up for a special offer, donate to a worthy cause, did you know, have you heard…
I’ve learned to be very protective of what I let into my inbox…there’s enough to clutter up my brain on a daily basis and I want to turn my attention to those things I find either important, inspiring or thought provoking.
I thought I’d share with you a couple of email newsletters that I read regularly that you might enjoy or find informative…I think it is about quality rather than quantity and certainly my interests may not align with yours… but I usually find that creatives are interesting regardless of the topic.
There are no shortage of artists who have their own newsletters - but here are a couple I enjoy immensely.
Denise Cerro Denise is a mixed media artist living in the San Diego, California area. Though she dabbles in assemblage and ephemera papers, most of her work is painting. Her real strength lies in the exuberance she conveys in moving paint around, working cooperatively with other artists and spreading her infectious love of art wherever she goes.
Helen Kitson Helen is a mixed media artist living in Worcester, England. A relative newcomer to collage, I love her honest approach to creating and am fascinated by the magic she creates with everyday detritus.
Riksmuseum This link will take you to the site for the Riksmuseum, the fine art museum located in Amsterdam. The Southern Man and I fell in love with Amsterdam when we visited in 2018 and spent a day at the Riksmuseum. They have a newsletter you can sign up for which comes out on an irregular basis but is always filled with fascinating information. Last year they completed an updated treatment of “The Night Watch” by Rembrandt and their newsletter covered all the techniques they used to keep this famous painting preserved for generations to come.
I have interests outside of collage and these two writers give me insight on differing views.
Austin Kleon The author of “Steal like an Artist” and “Keep Going” has a weekly list of 10 things that you should know about…often movie, book or music related, I find that it helps me to keep in touch with what a younger, hipper crowd is tracking.
Heather McLaughlin Heather is a coach and a writer…someone who helps to get you unstuck with whatever in your work (whatever the discipline) is troublesome. She sends out an occasional newsletter with ideas and suggestions on how to work better and smarter in a very down to earth manner.
And lastly, two artist photographers who just have the most lovely images to share.
Kim Klassen Kim is an artisan living in Manitoba, Canada. I initially discovered Kim years ago when I needed some instruction on how to use my SLR camera, how to get started in Photoshop and how to pull it all together. Since then, Kim has branched out in several directions…writing, coaching, video, but she always has the most gorgeous photographs that capture the essence of everyday life.
Cathy Penton Cathy is a designer living in the countryside of Australia. Her beautiful esthetic shines through in the simple art products she creates, enhanced with her splendid photography and sublime quotes of wisdom.
So there you have it…I would love to hear what newsletters you read on a regular basis…just comment below and I’ll share an update with these links from you in a future newsletter.
Since it is November…and American Thanksgiving is at the end of the month…I again want to express my gratitude for the support I receive from each of you…whether it is subscribing to my newsletter, following me on Instagram or patronizing my Etsy shop, it makes this artistic life all worthwhile. Thank you.
