Here in the Northern Hemisphere, March is an odd month…it seems that spring wants to break through and make itself known…but winter is not quite ready to relinquish control, though many of us are done with snow, ice and cold. It’s a few months into the new year and maybe you’re not quite sure how it’s going yet…is it too early to wish for summer vacation?
I recently stumbled upon a new site called Moon Lists…it was mentioned in a New York Times article in which the author was offering a different way to think about yearly resolutions (which are often jettisoned in February or March!). What if, instead of resolutions, you considered what you wanted more of in your life…and likewise, what would you like less of in your life. It seems to me to be a nuanced approach than making those resolutions that make you feel that you have failed if you don’t succeed with whatever scheme you had in mind. Taking time to assess what’s going on in your life and tweaking it ever so slightly with this more or less approach I think has merit. Given that there’s way too much commotion going on in the world, stopping to take a moment (or even an hour!) to consider what has value in your life and what you want more of is a valid exercise.
That’s the thinking behind the workshops I have been offering…let’s spend a couple of hours in a positive space, where you can just show up - they are easy, relaxing sessions to break out the scissors and the glue, get your creative juices flowing and just have some fun - no special techniques, no complicated skills, no pressure.
My next workshop on March 22 is Whimsical Garden Buckets. A 10# tin can, an oversupply of ephemera, plenty of glue, wire, ribbon, fabric and buttons and you can fashion a creation to hold gardening tools, display a floral bouquet, round up supplies in your office or just look charming on your desk! I’ve been working on a new collage series since the first of the year called “Bird Talk”. It’s based on the idea of what birds might say to one another if only we had the capacity to hear them…it has elicited plenty of snickers as I pair vintage papers, found objects and no shortage of bird illustrations into a unique collage composition. The first four of the series are available here in my Etsy shop.
There’s not much else going on here…taking it easy and finding solace in our tidy nest…keeping my focus on what I can do within my community to make it better and trying out new ideas with my art…and waiting for spring to arrive in all its hope and greenness.
